For a long time the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been battling to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment, which can cause variations in genes, or even entire genomes. Over time, these changes can result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The term “evolution” is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck’s embryologist disciple who came up with the term “transmutation” to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of living or producing offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren’t passed down to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn’t be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird’s ancestor.

In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbook content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions for example, such as the development of medications and other treatments, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a deep faith in God and want to understand how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God’s word and should be believed to be true. Although Creationists may not all be Christian but many are. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was literal and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs might not be as well-known, but their beliefs are as passionate like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a lie.

Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as “continuous evolutionism” or the “evolution of the created species.” This theory states that God creates original species and then allows these to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they evolved slowly afterwards. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has won its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
